Kathmandu, June 20
According to the managing director of Nepal Telecom, Buddhi Prasad Acharya, the company is going to upgrade 6 lakh 45 thousand landline phones country-wide into IP technology in the next three years.
25 thousand landline phones have already been switched to IP, according to Acharya. The purpose of this upgrade is to strengthen data services, provide broadband internet to consumers, and abide by current standards.
European countries and America currently have IP-based landline services. Acharya informed Setopati that the switch is going to begin in Kathmandu valley and slowly spread throughout the country. “Consumers are not only going to get excellent voice services, but also internet services.”, Acharya said. Currently, Telecom is operating ADSL with normal technology, but after the upgrade, internet speed will be much faster.
Under the normal technology, the internet-speed that is distributed to consumers starts at 128 kbps, but with IP technology, the minimum speed will increase to 254 kbps. Internet users are going to benefit from Telecom’s upgrade.
Acharya said that although internet speed is going to increase, the costs will not rise. He added that there will be a gradual move to provide television-viewing services in areas where internet consumption is high.
Currently, exchange centers for internet distributed by Nepal Telecom are separated by long distances, which means that the risk of leakage is high. With IP technology, there will be exchange centers every 2 kilometers, making leakage less likely.
